Spring is right around the corner, and there are seemingly infinite things to do this season in the Austin area.

The warmer, not too-humid yet weather means that it’s the best time to be outside. Thankfully, there’s tons to do here – everything from hiking and bike trails to events and markets. But if you’re feeling overwhelmed by choices, or want to make the most of your free time, we’ve narrowed down the top five best things to do in Austin this season.

1. Take in some native flora.

A must-do on our list is the native plant garden at Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in southwest Austin. Here, you’ll see 650 different varieties of plants on more than 284 acres. This is a great way to get outside with the whole family. They also have nature trails available, too!

2. Take a hike!

While we’re talking native flora, we also want to remind you of our great local nature trails. Make sure to check out Mayfield Nature Preserve‘s 21 acres of beautiful park space (and their famous peacocks!). This spot is listed on the National Register of Historic Place and is an excellent option for a mild, stress-relieving walk or for wildlife viewing.

For a bit more intensity, try a hike up Mount Bonnell in Covert Park for the best views in Austin (it’s the highest point in Austin!). There are plenty of hiking options for various intensities and the park is always free.

If you’re looking for a little more speed, you can try Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin. This spot has easy access if you’re in the city and of course, gives you options of 10-mile biking or hiking trails.

3. Have a picnic.

If you’re looking for a little more relaxing and a little less workout, why not try a picnic? Any of the hiking spots above make for a great picnic location, too, but if you want to get out of town a little further, try the 360-acre oasis of Zilker Park. The park has three designated picnic spots along with some other fun amenities, like a disc golf field and volleyball courts.

4. Go to a festival.

There are tons of great spring festivals and events around Austin this spring, too. Why not try a new one? For an iconic Austin experience, check out some up-and-coming bands and indie films at SXSW between March 11-20. Or why not do something completely different and attend one of the three days of NASCAR racing later in the month.

5. Shop local.

Last but not least, make sure to check out our farmers markets. There’s nothing better than spending the weekend mornings browsing through local produce, homemade treats and a bit of local music. Make sure to check out SFC Farmers Market Downtown each Saturday in Republic Square. This market features plenty of sustainable items and artisan foods. On Sundays, head to the Texas Farmers Market at Mueller. Voted the best in Austin for seven years, this market features more than 120 local vendors.
